When Alexander Cohen was to produce Bill Manhoff's The Owl and the Pussycat, Kim Stanley was slated to play Doris W. When Cohen dropped it and Philip Rose picked it up and produced it (with a couple of partners), Diana Sands played the role, opposite Alan Alda as F. Sherman. The first tour starred Eartha Kitt and Russell Nype. The second tour starred Pat Suzuki and Robert Reed. Reed was succeeded by Richard Vath. Alda directed it at the Coconut Grove in Florida, reprising his original role opposite Rita Moreno. At the Mineola Theatre (once a major year-round stock theatre), Orson Bean and Phyllis Newman starred. And, of course, the film version starred Barbra Streisand and George Segal.
