In the 1977-78 season, I used to like to alternate between "The Act" at the Majestic, and "On the 20th Century" across the street at the St. James. If I joined the 2nd act at the Majestic, I got Liza strutting thru "City Light." If I did the reverse and spent the 2nd act at the St. James, I got to enjoy Judy Kaye (and earlier Madeline Kahn) doing the fabulous "Babette" sequence. It was pretty wonderful, and easy to do....as I recall the intermissions basically almost aligned. By the summer of '78, I usually started with Liza and IF she wasn't at her best (you could tell as she would remove herself from certain sequences if she was tired), I'd go across the street to "20th Century". If Liza was cooking, I'd stay at the Majestic. Of course, "On the 20th Century" was and remains the superior piece of musical theatre, but Liza alone made "The Act" stunning. |
