| BIRDLAND JAZZ CLUB PRESENTS THE RETURN OF ACCLAIMED SINGER AND PIANIST STEVE ROSS "PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ: STEVE ROSS SINGS FRED ASTAIRE" CELEBRATING THE 125th BIRTHDAY OF THE LEGENDARY SONG AND DANCE MAN MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11 "The suavest of all male cabaret performers." – The New York Times BIRDLAND JAZZ CLUB will present the return of acclaimed pianist and singer Steve Ross in his show "Puttin' on the Ritz: Steve Ross Sings Fred Astaire" on Monday, November 11 at 7:00 PM. This year marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Fred Astaire, who is not only acknowledged as one of the all-time great dancers, but the performer who introduced the most standards in the Great American Songbook. Mr. Ross will bring his talents to such songs as "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Night and Day," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," and "Cheek to Cheek." There is a $40 music charge. Birdland is located at 315 West 44th Street in New York. Steve Ross was raised in Washington, DC, and heard a lot of music at home, some from his mother who played piano. In due course, he studied piano himself and by the time he had attended Georgetown University and served in the US Army, he had become an accomplished pianist, drawing his repertoire from the Great American Songbook. In the early ‘70s he settled in New York City where he soon became well known on the cabaret scene. Ted Hook, owner of Backstage, a piano bar in midtown, hired him. The association was successful and in 1979 Hook opened a new club, Onstage, especially to showcase Ross' talents. In 1981, Ross was booked into the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel where he played a considerable part in establishing the room as a perennial favorite. He would find himself accompanying leading entertainers who happened to be in the audience, among them Liza Minnelli and Ginger Rogers. He has played many festivals, including Perth in Australia, Spoleto in Italy, and Hong Kong. Other international venues include seasons at London's Ritz Hotel and Pizza on the Park. In 1989, he hosted a live series for BBC Television, and back in America was host of "New York Cabaret Nights" for National Public Radio. Ross maintained his popularity and high standards through the ‘90s and into the early ‘00s. In the winter of 1996, he appeared in a revival of Noël Coward's Present Laughter at the Walter Kerr Theatre; the show, starring Frank Langella. Ross' repertoire draws from the work of songwriters past and present, such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, with whose work he has a special affinity, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and Stephen Sondheim. He has appeared with pianist Judy Carmichael, performing the show entitled "Style Meets Stride," featuring the music of Porter and Fats Waller. Ross sings in a light baritone voice, playing the piano with verve. For several years, he has been referred to as ‘the Crown Prince of New York Cabaret," an unofficial but merited title. "A Place for Us" is a celebration of Jewish culture, honoring the songs and stories of Jewish composers and their crucial contributions to the American musical. Recently seen at Paper Mill Playhouse in Fiddler on the Roof, Axelrod will put his signature and heartfelt spin on some favorite songs from musical theater, the Great American Songbook, pop music, and more. Ari Axelrod crafts a stunning exploration, through music, of what makes us human. The Jewish Week named Ari one of the 36 most influential Jews under the age of 36 in The United States. He received the 2022 Bistro Award for Theatrical Artistry in Song. His debut solo show, "Taking the Wheel," directed by Tony Award winner Faith Prince, has been performed in numerous cities around the country. The evening features songs ranging from the obscure to the collectively beloved, from the mid-19th century and Rodgers & Hammerstein to The McGarrigle Sisters and current material. She will be joined by Gerald Sternbach on piano and Yair Evnine on cello and guitar. Since her debut in 2001, Maude has gained a loyal following and critical acclaim, performing across the United States and Europe; notably at Cafe Carlyle, and her longtime yearly engagement at The Oak Room of The Algonquin Hotel. Maude has been featured in Michael Feinstein's "Standard Time" at Carnegie Hall, and "A Prairie Home Companion" with Garrison Keillor. She has also performed at Lincoln Center with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, and sang for Dr. Cornel West's celebration at Princeton University. On film, Maude can be seen in the Johnny Mercer documentary for TCM, "This Time the Dream's on Me," directed by Clint Eastwood. She has been the subject of NPR's "Morning Edition," and was a favorite of radio personality Jonathan Schwartz. Susan breathes new life into beloved jazz standards, timeless classics from the Great American Songbook, and a sprinkling of contemporary surprises. She'll be singing compositions by legends such as Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Billy Strayhorn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and The Beatles. Pianist Allen Farnham will serve as music director, with David Finck on bass, Eric Halvorson on drums, and Tim Armacost on tenor sax, with direction by Lina Koutrakos. A native New Yorker with a lifelong passion for music, Susan's journey from the world of finance to the stage has been nothing short of extraordinary.
