It was doing quite well, close to 100% capacity (or more) for the entire run and decent grosses, despite less than favorable reviews and no Tony wins. (Notably, one of the rare instances of a nomination snub in Audra's career.) Rhiannon Giddens was meant to replace a pregnant Audra, but Rudin decided to close the show when advance sales softened. There was speculation at the time that her pregnancy was just a scapegoat for a show that was going to run out of steam anyway, and anyway the show was an ensemble piece with Brandon Victor Dixon, Joshua Henry, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Billy Porter receiving equal billing with Audra. So hard to say if it's a good case study on her box office pull. |
