| I very much agree. Gypsy is like catnip for theatre people. But theatre people don't keep long runs open. Tourists do. While the show is exquisite, it is hardly a show where you can just sit back and enjoy the show. There isn't really love story, the lead is a maniacal mother, it culminates in a nervous breakdown, features strippers without (deliberately without) sexiness. It's just not the show most would pick on a rare trip to NYC. I hope to see it, and I also am excited for a change up in direction. I do think it could be a modest hit, if all goes well. But a blockbuster it will never be. The Peters revival suffered for neither the star nor the production winning the Tony. The LuPone revival was selling decently (although not huge) until the economy collapsed 6 months after opening. It should benefit from reviews (which will provoke theatre people, if not tourists, to suck it up and shell out for a ticket). Also, I have not followed this seasons' happenings super closely, but I assume a number of shows will close in the new year. If I could rule Broadway, I would have a limited run (3 months?) of Gypsy every 5 years, new star and director each time. Enough for the theatre people to get their fix, but not have to really worry about producing it like a Weissler. |
