| That was my first thought. "They fired him for losing his temper once and saying the wrong thing?" None of us should be judged on our worst day. But reading the letter carefully, he does allude to some other things that he said, and that he said he learned were related to his stroke. Knowing him somewhat, I believe it--he's a really nice guy. And yes, I've had people humiliate me in work meetings and it's horrible when it happens. But I also believe in person discussions and conversations could have cleared that up--until it happened again at the meeting in question. I also agree that he single handedly kept the York running, and clearly ($2.2 million operating budget) on a shoestring. He was always there at the performances, he was always fund raising, he was always sending notes to people he thought would enjoy a show. But 50 years as artistic director! Wow. I wish he could have left with a celebration of his career and congratulations from the board, instead of in this sad manner. But artistically, if a theater is to survive, you have to groom a successor or get the board looking for a successor and not be the only person who can run something. I am sorry to say this but I predict the York won't survive 18 months without him. |
