There's a few more details at the gift link to the NY Times article on the subject. It sounds like the diversity issue that started Morgan's tirade wasn't the diversity of the performers on stage, but the diversity of the audience -- that some felt the York wasn't doing what it could to attract a more diverse audience. It sounds like Morgan realized that it wasn't in his best interest to keep himself in circumstances where the impact of the stroke was already making it difficult, and that he was responding to difficult situations in a way that he didn't want to continue to be responding. Morgan's open letter makes it clear that he takes responsibility for his behavior, and his resignation effectively means that his tirade won't happen again. I hope his immediate resignation makes it possible for there to be a graceful end to his time there, as others have noted they hope for as well. Veering a bit off-topic, the NY Times article notes that the York was budgeted for $2.2 million in 2023, and Morgan was paid $95,000. From online information, it seems Morgan was paid between $53,000 and $87,000 in the five years before the pandemic, and grosses were $1.8 million - $2.1 million, of which 2/3 were from contributions (as opposed to ticket sales). Are those numbers typical compared to other theater organizations in New York of that size? I would have thought he would have gotten paid more because that seems like a tough salary for New York given the amount he was responsible for, but maybe that's typical in this scenario. |
