The Playbill article cites the lack of diversity in casting in their current show, "InunDATEd," and the Noel Coward one-night celebration. The York's fall offering has been a series of 4 musicals that are new to New York. Three of them (Now Comes the Fun Part, Twist of Fate, and Monte Cristo) have been described in this thread as having had a diverse cast. Both actors in InunDATEd appear to be white, but I think there are only two actors in the show. As a person of color, it is my personal opinion that it is not problematic to have a 2-person show with 2 white actors, if the other shows in a series all have a diverse cast. (I do not know if there are understudies for InunDATEd; I would guess that there aren't since the show is only running for 10 days.) The Noel Coward celebration appears to have 3 performers, who all appear to be white. In isolation, for the reasons above, not concerning to me, but not a great look to have that back-to-back with the two-person all-white cast. But would I ask someone to resign (or resign myself) because five performers are white rather than, say, three? I have no inside information, but it seems like there's more to the story with the Associate Artistic Director and James Morgan's departure than these 5 performers. |
