See? Full of "stirring anthems" is not the way to construct a show. One anthem is enough. If you are writing a show, find an angle to present your theme without being preachy or "woke" and the audience will get it. They don't need to be hit over the head. I keep thinking about the early 2020 revival of The Unsinkable Molly Brown in which Molly was turned into a "social justice warrior." And the extramarital flirtation she had (in the original and in the movie) was moved over to her husband, because the wrongheaded thinking of today is that men are pigs and women must be portrayed as perfect. The show was terrible. Ruined. And the female critic at The New York Times said, "Where's the moral ambiguity?" Moral ambiguity equals drama. Theatre.
And "Suffs" always makes me think of Puffs, the tissue. |
