Whether one finds it "preachy" or not, one need only look at the several numbers they have on youtube to see what that poster means. It is not a particularly nuanced piece of writing, and the music and lyrics are very basic and repetitive and even rudimentary at times... mix that with a clear and simple message, and I understand why it seems "preachy"... like a high school history class set to music, or a show written for a city's historical center to present or have tour to high schools around the state.

Having stirring anthems is certainly not an argument against it being preachy... stirring anthems are often preachy, even by their nature. That doesn't make them bad.

I'm glad you liked it so much. I also never got to see the full show on stage, but I would not promote the writing in this show as top tier broadway caliber, or top tier off-broadway caliber. It winning a Tony for Book and/or Score is a result of it being a very weak year that was also crowded with mediocre writing. I genuinely expected it to win Best Musical but not book or score.

But the show has many supporters clearly. To each her own.
