| Yesterday, by coincidence, I caught Hollywood's Superman on-screen and Broadway's Spider-Man onstage. ''Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,'' now in movie theaters, is a powerful and poignant documentary by Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui. It traces his inspiring journey from an unknown stage actor to the movies' Man of Steel to a real-life hero who championed the fight and plight of the disabled. Jeff Daniels recalled being in an Off-Off-Broadway play with William Hurt and Reeve. When Reeve revealed he was going to audition for Richard Donner's 1978 movie of ''Superman,'' Hurt was appalled and berated Reeve: ''You can't do that. That would be selling out.'' And when Reeve's poet-professor father, Franklin D'Olier Reeve, found out his son was cast in ''Superman,'' he initially ordered Champagne to celebrate, only to be disappointed. His serious-minded dad misunderstood and thought his son had been cast in George Bernard Shaw's ''Man and Superman.'' But the legendary John Houseman once told the young man: ''Mr. Reeve, it's very important for you to become a serious classical actor. Unless, of course, they offer you a boatload of money to do something else.'' ''Super/Man'' beautifully captures Reeve's personal heroism and humanity, as told by his loving family and friends. At Feinstein's at the Nikko in San Francisco, Reeve Carney is showcasing his own skills and charisma, having made his Broadway debut singing and swinging through over 900 performances of ''Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.'' He followed that with a multi-year run as one of the Grammy-winning stars of the Tony-winning ''Hadestown.'' And now Carney is literally on his own, doing his solo cabaret act of "Rocky Horror Picture Show." In paying tribute to Richard O'Brien's cult-classic musical, he's an amazing, one-man band as he sings, plays the guitar and piano, lip-synchs movie dialogue and banters with his boistrous audience. Carney will captivate you with his musicianship and Riff Raff-ish charm. He's got one more show tonight in S.F. (Oct. 12) and then he rocks out to his ''Rocky'' act on Oct. 25 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at the Green Room in NYC (TheGreenRoom42.com), where it'll even be live-streamed. |
