| Was there last night -- Jemin Moon was on and was totally fine. Very exciting watching him navigate the top of Act Two, even if the music got lost in the general athleticism of the moment. I was disappointed to not see Tom Francis as I'm sure it elevates the show even more. Agree that his youth played into the narrative. Scherzinger is phenomenal. The staging definitely enlivens the material, but there aren't enough gimmicks to keep the momentum constant across the board. Lloyd doesn't quite know how to use the ensemble, so 80% of the show is just three people standing in pinpoint spot lights on a blank stage. The casting of such a virile and powerful (and young-ish?) Max sort of fought the text, in my opinion. The use of the black and white live capture is pretty thrilling and absolutely the most successful use of this kind of approach so far, because it has a direct connection to the textual and thematic material at play. It never stops being singularly a JAMIE LLOYD PRODUCTION (as emphasized several times literally on screen throughout the show) to rise to create a cohesive element from all creative corners, but a very exciting theatrical endeavor for sure. Will most likely return to sit closer and catch Tom Francis. |
