One of my favorite comedy songs of all time is Peter Mills' ''Way Ahead of My Time'' from his ''Taxi Cabaret'' revue. In it, a young caveman wrestles with how to tell his primitive papa that his artistically inclined son isn't like ''the other caveman.'' He sings: ''Remember when you took me hunting for mastodon? How, at first, I nearly fainted, then I hurried home and painted? People saw my sketch and learned my story, and passed it on, 'Cause it was plastered on the wall for the glory of us all. With a spear in hand, I fear I'm ineffectual, 'Cause I might just be the world's first Homo ... Sapien who's an intellectual. ...'' I just love Mills' wit, and especially how he came up with one-of-a-kind rhymes, pairing ''mastodon'' with ''passed it on'' and ''plastered on.'' Mills continues the song with more inner rhymes and even finds ingenious ways to find phrases that rhyme with ''Pleistocene.'' That's genius! If you don't know ''Way Ahead of My Time,'' here's Seth Golay's delightful rendition below ... |
