I really wanted to love this. I barely even liked it. The songs are mostly really good, but they certainly don't make up a score to a musical, nor do they justify this being a musical.
The book is really weak, in my opinion. Full of both mediocre and, at times, bad book writing that non-musical people seem to think is fine or even preferable for a musical, as well as not being interesting or deep enough in what it does or tries to do.
It's not convincing nor compelling.
And the direction was notably bad.
I'm glad I saw it out of curiosity, but I'm glad I didn't pay very much to. If it comes to NYC I hope they do a LOT of work, and with a different director. |
