| The Kander-Ebb-Stein musical was titled Over and Over at Signature in Arlington when it was first produced there. They had made changes to build up the role of the stage manager for Dorothy Loudon, which they realized was a mistake. It was later produced under the title All About Us at Westport in a version closer to their earlier drafts. In 1964, Bernstein, Comden and Green worked for a few months on a musical version of the play. Jerome Robbins was to direct, and CBS/Columbia was to provide the complete financing. Bernstein took a sabbatical from his duties at the New York Philharmonic to work on the show. The writing did not go smoothly. Only two or three songs were written. Two of them were in the revue By Bernstein, and one of those songs, "Spring Will Come Again" does get performed and has been recorded. But the process of trying to the write the show was so stressful and unpleasant that for a time the long friendship between Bernstein and Comden and Green was strained. It wasn't too long before they made things up. Forgive any typos. My eyes are dilated. |
