PLAYBILL

CELEBRATES ITS 140TH ANNIVERSARY

WITH THE PLAYBILL LEGACY COVER INITIATIVE

THROUGHOUT OCTOBER

EVERY BROADWAY SHOW TO DISTRIBUTE

FOUR VERSIONS OF ITS PLAYBILL,

EACH WITH A DIFFERENT LEGACY COVER

COMMEMORATING DIFFERENT ERAS THROUGHOUT BROADWAY HISTORY

New York, NY (September 24, 2024) – In honor of its 140th Anniversary, Playbill, the leading theatre resource and memento since 1884, will be printing and distributing special Playbill Legacy Covers – only available to theatre patrons. Throughout the month of October, every Broadway will be distributing four special versions of its Playbill, each boasting a different Legacy Cover. These Legacy Covers commemorate different eras of Playbill and Broadway—from black and white to modern day. In total, 148 different covers have been designed and will be distributed to patrons throughout October, with each audience member receiving one complimentary Playbill, as always.

Playbill is set to unveil images of the entire collection of Legacy Covers on Tuesday, October 1 at http://www.playbill.com/140-anniversary-playbills.

The Playbill Legacy Covers are included as a wrap-around addition to the modern day covers, serving as a unique overlaying supplement and keepsake that invites audiences to appreciate how a Broadway show could have been presented in different decades throughout the 20th century.

"We are exceedingly proud of Playbill's 140-year legacy and status as the most enduring symbol of Broadway show-going. This is a way for us to celebrate all that history, while giving Broadway fans something extra special to hold onto," said Philip S. Birsh, President and Chairman of Playbill

"We could not have done this without the help of so many members of our community; the producers of these great shows, the marketing agencies and their design teams, and the ushers who hand them out to the public. My family and I are so appreciative of all the players in this project, with special thanks to the Playbill staff who worked tirelessly on making this dream a reality," shares Alex Birsh, Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Playbill.

The designs for these special covers were inspired by the Playbill covers for Merrily We Roll Along (the 1934 play), Damn Yankees (1955), Mame (1966), and A Little Night Music (1973). The Playbill Legacy Cover initiative was created in collaboration with AKA, The Pekoe Group, RPM, Serino Coyne, Situation Interactive, and SPOTCO.

Playbill encourages audience members to take only one special Playbill, and to come back again and again to the theatre to celebrate incredible Broadway performances and collect other versions. The company also encourages patrons to strike up conversations with their seat neighbors, share their own Broadway history, and to trade covers.

Theatre fans are encouraged to post and share their special Playbills using the tag: #Playbill140

ABOUT LEGACY COVER POSTERS

Also beginning in October, The Playbill Store will have Legacy Cover Posters available for purchase, with a percentage of every poster sold benefitting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Each poster will celebrate a specific production, showcasing their four Playbill Legacy Covers.
