So much fantastic music was cut for the CD. I especially miss the full version of "We Share Everything," which includes some of Bill Russell's most delightful lyrics and POWERHOUSE singing from Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley. Just thinking of their "ay-ay-ay-ays" that led into the dance break gives me goosebumps.

I'm sure I'm forgetting other examples, but it did seem rare, in the 90s, to get a cast recording with entire songs missing, and I really miss "You Deserve a Better Life," which showcased Jeff McCarthy in top form. Similarly, the press conferences were a great way to chart the development of the twins' public personae. I might even argue that the one held during the second act's New Year's sequence alludes to the show's thesis statement as well as some of the show's big songs (Reporter: Whatever you are, don't you want to be normal? Violet: Whoever you are, don't you?").

Even some of the recit was not only beautiful but paid great emotional dividends, especially the "For me, Jake" and "I can't say no to you" motif between Violet and Jake. And Emily Skinner's "If we always get kisses, I'll try even harder" provided one of the evening's biggest laughs while still tugging at your heart strings.
