Alfred Drake had apparently also trained for an opera career, but at one point the story goes, he didn't pass a Met Opera audition, so he concentrated on musical theater instead. Btw, if you ever catch Drake's one leading role in film, a curiosity of a black and white film called "Tars and Spars" with an interesting cast including Janet Blair, Broadway dancers Anita Alvarez and Marc Platt, Sid Caesar and Hugh "Ward Cleaver" Beaumont, you'll hear Drake in really particularly beautiful voice. Unfortunately, the role and the black and white cinematography didn't make him stand out otherwise. It's kind of a cute film otherwise, and Janet Blair was really talented and beautiful in this and other films. |
