Respectfully, a large swath of people who've seen the play have voiced difficulty in comprehending the dialog, particularly (speaking personally) in the first act. I'm always baffled by posts that try to dissuade us, in effect set the record straight. As if it's either our auditory insufficiency or some inability to listen attentively. I've been going to the theater over a half a century, including yearly trips to London. I've seen (and thus heard) every type of UK dialect. Yet this production seems uniquely challenging. When we're lost early on, it's doubly frustrating because we're invested with the established circumstance and characters yet unable to absorb the nuances in their communication. But those of us straining to appreciate the evocative distinctions in the voices, the contrasting lexicons, the subtleties, aren't greenhorns lacking a sophisticated ear.
