The new Wolfe-helmed Gypsy has Camille Brown as the choreographer. This is the first revival of the show without a choreographer with a Jerome Robbins pedigree (worked with him or on productions of his shows). As much as I through and through love the original choreography, I'd love to see some new staging. I assume the Robbins estate will require reproduction of the original major choreography (someone please chime in if that isn't the case).
My question: how much room is allowed for new steps? The Peters and LuPone revivals did not have much difference in either the big dances or choreographed movement. What moments allow a new team to rethink staging?
Second question: does anyone know if they will be using the Laurents text edits from the LuPone revival, or the standard book? I liked the edits (SPOILER ALERT). Those changes include eliminating Rose eating dog food, the Kringelein "rape" and the Small World reprise prior to The Strip. The switch of Mazeppa from a gladiator-themed stripper to a Revolutionary War stripper makes more textual sense, although it makes her less quirky and fun. That was the only change I didn't really like. |
