Not exactly an enormous hit. It FELT like one but was it? It was also FINE at best... I'd go as far as to say it was not even very good from a directorial or production standpoint, if it even had one. And at times it was quite misdirected and poorly staged, which for a semi-staged bare-bones "production"/concert, is a pretty bad thing to be weak at. That revival was worthwhile specifically for the cast(s)... and it's multiple iterations of the cast. And I say that having not even loved many of the performances I saw (Joshua Henry I'm looking at you, sir). I wouldn't care how long it ran if I thought it was great or even artful or even thoughtful... it was FINE. It *mostly* didn't mess it up or get in the way of the material (except the GLARING issue of the staging of "It Takes Two" where the direction literally got in the way of the material)... but it is not an example of a brilliant director by any stretch. A worthwhile *producer* more accurately, I'd say. (that is when she's not allowing/commissioning people to rewrite and tear apart other peoples shows under the mission of celebrating underappreciated treasures) |
