Until about 1980 there was a magazine called Cue, weekly I think, that provided a comprehensive list of ALL activities in New York City. Theatre, music, lectures, movies, exhibits, book signings -- everything. Cue was bought by New York Magazine and kept up the service for a few years. TimeOutNY offered a similar listing. The NYTimes to a lesser degree, but still useful. Now, all gone. Now there is no single source of such information. You'd have to subscribe to every single venue -- from the 92nd Street Y to Carnegie Hall to Barnes & Noble (and other bookstores) to Fandango to MOMA to well you get the idea. And then you'd be bombarded with emails or text notifications from a multitude of sources. Cue and TimeOutNY offered a fast way of just going down the list to see what would be of interest. Once a week and you were set. I know that I'm missing a lot simply because trying to track down this stuff is exhausting. I don't know what's going on on any specific date in all the various venues in this city. It's too bad. If younger, I'd try to start a web site that would provide this type of comprehensive coverage. I can't be the only one walking around in the dark. |
