Two very big problems here. First, the show is too often inaudible due to overamplification. The gist of FB is, of course, Alessandrini’s revised and routinely clever lyrics which here are frequently, frustratingly lost to loudness. There are only four actors and one piano, and the theatre is small, so why the blaring sound design? Second, the show mostly spoofs the most recent Broadway fare which was, by and large, bland and uninteresting. The lack of distinctive or otherwise idiosyncratic material to lampoon makes for pale parody. The actors are predictably terrific—and working like mad—but this iteration of FB is just disappointing and, worse, aggravating. |
