A mostly bare stage, painted a bilious “brat green,” with chairs, benches, army cots added as needed. A couple of roll-on carts loaded with pastries and coffee, plus a big neon sign for the bakery. Everyone in modern dress; Cyrano mostly in a black leather jacket with a neon green stripe that matched the floor—and he was still wearing it in the final scene. Yes, he’s supposed to be broke, but it’s fifteen years later, and the jacket looked the same. All the more jarring for its reappearance since he was in uniform for the previous act.

The opening scene was played—until Cyrano’s entrance—almost entirely in one, in front of the curtain. They began late, so for a moment, I actually wondered if Lingiere’s bit of audience participation, getting us to chant, “This is our famous theatre!” was stalling while they dealt with a backstage issue. But no, that was evidently part of the much too long first act.

My daughter liked it more than I did, but I know the original better than she does.
