That's what I was gonna say. At a bunch of the nonprofits, at least in their Off-Broadway and at least sometimes in their Broadway houses (for those that have them), I frequently don't see standing ovations, even when the response at curtain calls suggests that most of an audience liked the show. The audiences are mostly hardcore theatregoers (some of whom have been seeing shows in New York even longer than I have) who do not feel the need to give standing ovations for every good show they see, much less for the not-so-good ones. |
