TBH I've never liked that moment in the score. I know it was Trude Rittmann's work, not Rodgers (not that that matters at all in terms of my not liking it). But I tend to think about all that odd carrying on about jam and bread similar to my feelings about Rodgers' seeming obsession with the difference between youth and childhood in his lyric for "Something Good."
