Gyllenhaal did an off-Broadway show a number of years ago for a fairly short run which didn't charge exorbitant prices; I remember the show wasn't very good -- something at the Laura Pels Theater on W. 46th St. involving the stage being flooded at some point was the most memorable thing in it. I don't think he required a huge salary to do the show. I'd say that perhaps his salary demands have risen next to that of Mr. Washington's, and more's the pity. The producers' price structure for this was intended, since you say it's an extremely limited run, to make a fast buck (lots of 'em). A Shakespeare play on Broadway with movie stars could also be used to introduce school kids to theater and make them life-long theater fans, among other things. When there were forward-looking producers like Hal Prince around, he used to have $2 tickets in the last row for "A Little Night Music" and some of his other shows to allow for this. Nowadays those might go for $150 or whatever the market might bear. It's rather disgraceful and short-sighted unfortunately.
