...I saw the revival in London last year. I actually really enjoyed it (though, clearly, I'm in the minority on here.) I did find this casting choice to be odd -- especially since the actor I saw as Cliff last November was... perfectly adequate. He was outshone by all of the main cast. I'm not some old stick in the mud who bemoans color blind casting or non-traditional casting choices in the theatre. I LOVE that actors of color are getting to do more period pieces than ever before -- in theatre and on television, too. When you look at casting in period pieces from decades past, you'd think people of color suddenly appeared on earth in the 1970s or something. And, I know there's some argument made that perhaps this production lives in some liminal space between the present and Weimar Germany. And I can buy that for the in-the-cabaret scenes -- I think a Black actor would be perfectly valid as the Emcee.

BUT, yes, in this particular case, Cliff is, by far, our most prominent character in the traditional book scenes, including scenes of a literal Nazi trying to recruit him. I guess we just have to go with it? I suppose the argument in favor is that making him a gay (or bisexual) Black man makes him even more of an outsider/observer. Clearly, a decision has been made that this role will be cast with Black actors, so, quibbling is for the birds, I guess.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in NY in a few weeks and curious to see how it compares to the West End production.
