Thanks for your thoughtful and gracious reply. Your perspective is what I was hoping to hear.

I admit to not always warming to people who are blunt but I realize that it is the forceful, aggressive people who found and maintain theatres for decades-long tenures. I love continuity so I'm not happy to see longstanding AD's being forced out, especially if it is for optics.

I've known many artistic directors, some who've had their jobs for over a decade, and they've all stepped aside willingly (at least publicly so). I can imagine that when one founds a theatre it's inevitable that they have a sense of ownership over it and their identity becomes enmeshed with the theatre's (both in their own minds and in the public's).

And I'm sure it isn't easy walking away from a job that pays high six figures or more. (From what I understand, Carole Rothman was not anywhere near the top of the pack salary-wise.)

I hope that Evan Cabnet has an equally-successful tenure and keeps Second Stage on track!
