I would say that all three of those sites are notoriously unreliable. It's highly unlikely (though I guess possible) that both Best Plays and Theatre World (neither of them always correct about things) would have missed Fontaine appearing in Forty Carats on Broadway.
The source for the probable (almost certain) misinformation may have been the New York Times obit for Fontaine, or it's possible that the Times got the wrong info from one of those sites. As discussed here recently when Gena Rowlands died, the Times often makes errors in its obituaries for people in the arts and often doesn't bother to correct the errors even after they've been informed (as indeed the error about Rowlands is still there). |
