Authors John and Noreen Steele claim that the body was that of ordinary seaman John Melville (a casualty from HMS Dasher). Reportedly, the British Royal Navy has confirmed this assertion and actually held a memorial service for Melville. I have also read that fairly recently circumstantial evidence backing up this claim has come to light.
Nevertheless, Ewen Montagu (in various sources) insisted that Glyndwr Michael was the real Major Martin. So the truth seems to be elusive. |
