With a strong director, like Preston Sturges in the hilarious "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek", she turns in a very funny, relatively restrained performance with some true feelings coming through about her situation (if you've never seen it, one miracle is how the movie got made and past the censors in 1943). Even in "The Perils of Pauline", with its raucous "Rumble" number, she can then pull back and sing a lovely ballad like "I Wish I Didn't Love You So". But she was known as "The Blonde Bombshell" and full of energy; Bob Hope famously called her an "a vitamin pill with legs". I can understand how she wouldn't be to everyone's taste -- actually no performer is, even the greatest stars have their detractors. She was a huge star, and she was very definitely a true original. Also, check out of "Papa, Don't Preach" -- a different melody for those expecting Madonna. She's fun, charming with energy, but not over the top like "Rumble" or "Hamlet".
