I love the Stratford Festival and have been maybe three times. All the productions are usually solid as it is more or less the national theater of Canada* and the performers and creatives are among the best working in the country. Lodging can be hard to get at last moment and I have stayed in nearby towns which is fine and a short drive if you have a car.

In my experience I have found their musicals to be the standout shows. I don't know why but it might be because they exist in some kind of cultural sweet spot between U.S. verve and U.K. reserve. The venues at the festival also work well with the musicals. A lot of thought and passion go into the musical revivals.

That said, I really wanted to see "London Assurance" because I have never seen it performed on stage.

The Shaw Festival is a physically more attractive and posh locale. I can't say if their quality has gone down but their seasons haven't tempted me since covid. They seem to edge further and further away from Shaw (or "written or set in Shaw's lifetime", a pretty wide net). That's understandable, Shaw can be a prickly pear even when his revivals are updated with gender and diversity casting.

*(Just a note, the Stratford Festival does not understandably like to be called the national theater of Canada because their funding from the government is increasingly minimal and they exist on audience and foundation money.)
