He and Ira were attempting something in their dramaturgy in the 20s that embraced a theretofor frivolous form and sophisticated it in a way that paved the road for the popular consensus on what the musical is that emerged with Rodgers and Hammerstein, and I’d be so curious what he would have written in response to Oklahoma! or West Side Story.
Or maybe he would’ve stayed in LA and kept writing for the movies. |
