''The panelists also mentioned not only how warmly received they were by this year's Broadway cast, but how Jonathan Groff talked to them about listening to the album over and over when he was younger.''

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Broadway revival of ''Merrily'' is how much the original cast members enjoyed basking in the glow of a show that they did over 40 years ago, which was then derided as a failure, now being received as a hit. And they loved meeting their current counterparts.

In our interview with Jim Walton for Talkin' Broadway, he had seen it on Broadway and Off-Broadway, gushing about Jonathan Groff: ''Jonathan is a great Franklin Shepard. He's handsome, honest, and committed throughout.'' And, in return, Jonathan gushed that Jim was ''impossibly generous and kind [when we met]. It was so encouraging to get the thumbs-up from Jim, especially since we were so early in the process. I have been a fan of his forever. ... The sound of him singing on the original cast album of 'Merrily' is absolute perfection. It's been such an honor to play the role he so brilliantly created.''

Last fall, Jim also told us: ''I'd love to see ['Merrily] win the Tony for Best Musical Revival.'' Happily, Jim and Jonathan got their Tony wishes rewarded.
