Having now watched the promotional video, one thing I would say is that since Julia Murney sounds very American, it makes sense to have a Madame Armfeldt who also sounds very American.

Although I can understand why it might be felt that Madame Armfeldt and Desiree should have accents that sound either a bit more upper-class or refined, and so something like RP or mid-Atlantic (Standard stage) is thought desirable, I don't see why any of the other characters should. And indeed that's how it was in the original production. No one except Gingold and Johns had English accents. Of course, the other characters, except Petra, sounded like they were of the educated classes, using General American or something close to it. Cariou, of course, perhaps sounding a bit Canadian. (I do wish more theatre programs still taught Edith Skinner, at least her General American, although not necessarily her Standard Stage, but it seems very few do nowadays.)

Btw, this production, based on the clips in the promo, seems a good deal busier than the original Prince-Birch staging, and not in good ways. And I think Sondheim might have said to the musical director something like, "Places for Henrik to show off by sustaining notes and so on are already in the score. Please don't break up the vocal line by adding more in places where I did not write them."

Having said that, I know two people who saw this production and loved it. Neither had never seen Night Music before, although one of them had, surprisingly, seen the film decades ago, and he is not a Sondheim fan.
