I imagine that part of the appeal for performers is the sense of getting a paid vacation in a lovely resort town by the sea. The theatre must really treat people well and provide good quality housing for those jobbing in. And that is a great business model.

I was reminded today in another thread of Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven, NJ, which is located on Long Beach Island, a busy summer beach destination for residents of NY, NJ, and PA. Surflight has not seemed to be able to make any kind of business model work in recent years and I've never understood why, considering that their location, just a couple of blocks from the beach at the Jersey Shore, about a 2.5 hour drive from Manhattan, should be as coveted as Oguinquit, perhaps even more so due to the closer proximity to New York. It's been a long time since they've even been able to job in AEA actors, much less present a season as interesting and with well-known performers as what Oguinquit does every single season. I'd have thought the best of Broadway would be lining up to work at Surflight and have a paid vacation "dunna shore" and do a production that other producers and directors might actually schlep out to see. But it seems to not be the case.
