I was there this afternoon. Wow, just wow! And I normally detest CATS, but this production made it real, not “let’s pretend we’re cats” nonsense.

It brings together two classics from the 1980’s—CATS, the musical, and the movie Paris is Burning, which first showed the world drag balls.

We would not have gotten to this moment, nearly 40 years later, without Paris is Burning, Madonna, RuPaul’s Drag Race, huge strides in the LGBT movement, Pose, etc. Here we are where LGBT constantly shows resilience while CATS the musical does the same. (Add to that Andre de Shields’ personal journey with HIV.). It was genius to put them together—and the result is a miracle. Those who knew both worlds would get the most from the production. I’m wondering what younger people who may not be familiar with CATS or know much about drag balls think. Would general Bway audiences get it at all?

Surprisingly, I found that the production reveals what a nicely layed out score CATS has, with dominant leitmotifs (especially for Grizabella and McCavity) and songs building to a stunning climax.

Finally, I love CATS!
