Just now getting back to this.

Despite having performed in THE KING & I as a young Louis, despite the fact that cannot whistle a happy tune (or dance a tango, or read Greek, FWIW)... I do not remember the rhythms of "Hello, Young Lovers" nearly as well as I should.

But listening to Marni Nixon sing this song compared to more recent recordings, it seems that everyone from Julie Andrews forward allowed themselves to backphrase. There's a clearly a rubato over the end of the musical phrase "cling very close to each other tonight," (and its repeats) which surely must be in the printed score, but otherwise, I do think we're just hearing some singers who want to languish in this melody a bit... and backphrasing is what they went with.

Let's blame jazz. Or Julie.

p.s. -- I do agree that following the rhythm of Anna's self-corrections is just as actable and believable as what's been happening lately! As Ms. Cook can easily pull off!
