I might get the details wrong but they way I remember is that when Emily goes back to her perfect day the theatre was suddenly filled with the smell of bacon frying and then a side curtain parted and we saw a real working kitchen with old stovetop, complete with "sunlight" streaming in from the kitchen sink window. Emily's mother entered dressed in period costume (as opposed to the modern day rehearsal clothes worn by the rest of the cast), and I think might also have used a New England accent when now speaking. The effect was very jarring and wonderfully moving.
