I can't remember if it was in his Letters or Diaries or whether someone just surmised about it, but I'd always heard that Williams bore some resentment that Smith turned his sneering, judgmental persona to Broadway and Hollywood glory. (Of course there wasn't much that Williams didn't resent.)
For those unfamiliar with a performer who was, in his day, one of the most recognizable and beloved British entertainers alive, I'd recommend watching his work in the many CARRY ON movies and reading his sad and scabrous collections of Letters and Diaries. He was a fascinating man possessed of great talent and keen intellect.
There's also the made-for-TV film starring Michael Sheen doing an uncanny imitation. |
