Your post reminds me of Sondheim's famous story about "Rose's Turn," how Hammerstein persuaded him(and Styne, who had gone along with Sondheim)to ALLOW the song to come to a conclusion which would let the audience give Merman a huge ovation. And why that worked better for the final key scene between Rose and Louise--and therefore for GYPSY as a whole.
