Also Lonelyhearts, which credits Howard Teichmann's short-lived play adapted from the Nathanael West novella, along with the novella. I don't know how much it takes from the play as opposed to being adapted directly from the novella, but it would seem that the play at least led to the film as it appeared a year after the play. And the novella had been published in 1933.

Watching the film, it's hard not to feel sorry for Robert Ryan having to try to make it believable that anyone would say his character's dialogue. Maureen Stapleton, in what was basically her film debut, is great.
