That is weird. I think it's a terrible film, by a good distance the worst film version of a Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical. The screenplay is not good, and the direction is not good. Unlike schauspieler, I'm not bothered by it having been shot partly on location and partly in the studio, at least I don't think doing that was necessarily a bad idea. Lots of good films have been done that way. The problem is that it's done badly. Actually, since Carousel contains fantasy elements, I think it might have been best to shoot the whole thing in the studio where a consistency might have been achieved. In any case, the results weren't good.

Maybe John Chu chose it to demonstrate all the dangers of filming a stage musical, and he will say something like "I watched this so that I wouldn't make the same mistakes." :) But that seems unlikely.
