| MANHATTAN ASSOCIATION OF CABARETS PRESENTS MAC TO SCHOOL SEPTEMBER 28 & 29, 2024 The Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) announces the ninth year of its MAC TO SCHOOL weekend event. The two-day interactive cabaret symposium features master classes, panel discussions, seminars, workshops, and showcases, and will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 28 & 29, at Don't Tell Mama and Studios 353 in Manhattan. MAC TO SCHOOL is open to both MAC members and non-members. · Flat registration fee for MAC members: $90 · Registration fee for non-MAC members: $165, or join MAC for only $65 (basic level) for a full-year membership to take advantage of the deeply discounted MAC member price of only $90 for the entire MAC TO School weekend (as well as discounts to other MAC events throughout the year!). Don't Tell Mama's Chief Technical Director Kelly Wohlford takes a deep dive into the mechanics of color, space, and movement, and how performers can utilize those powers to make their show pop. Wohlford will also demystify the "tech sheet," the document the Tech Director works from to light a show on the fly. Q and A. 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Pathos of Patter with Carolyn Montgomery This class takes a comprehensive look at the spoken word in a cabaret act. Seventy-five minutes includes basic principles for creating dialogue that is both interesting and authentic, while supporting the music that is the focal point of any program. An outline of specific guidelines, followed by a brief demonstration by the instructor, highlights the building blocks for creating effective patter. Four participants will bring in samples of their spoken work to perform for the class, and receive feedback from the instructor. (4 participation slots available) 1:30-2:45 p.m. Panel Discussion: Nuts and Bolts: Establishing, Maintaining, and Growing Your Cabaret Career A cross-section of cabaret professionals discuss best practices, shortcuts, what works, and what's possible in the cabaret industry. A wide-ranging discussion with useful nuggets for beginning, emerging, and mid-career cabaret artists. Q & A. Panel includes promoter, performer, editor/publisher of NiteLifeExchange Scott Barbarino; Meg Flather, winner of the 2024 MAC Award for Major Artist; director, songwriter, and dramatist Barry Kleinbort; performer and booking manager at Don't Tell Mama Sidney Myer; entertainer, singer, story teller, and host Richard Skipper; pianist, composer, and musical director Yaz; and is moderated by actor, singer, and MAC Award-nominated cabaret artist Cheo Bourne. 3–3:30 p.m. Vocal Warm-Up Extravaganza with William Zeffiro In this interactive lecture-demonstration, William Zeffiro will guide attendees through a comprehensive warm-up designed to bring the vocal instrument into alignment, reduce tension, and get the breath moving, while simultaneously analyzing and explicating the function of each exercise. You'll leave this session with a battery of vocal exercises built upon Zeff's extensive knowledge of anatomy, acoustics, and vocal mechanics, from which you'll be able to pick and choose, depending on your own vocal needs, for years to come. 3:30-5:30 p.m. Cabaret Performance Master Class with Vivian Reed Winner of the 2024 MAC Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cabaret, Vivian Reed has had a distinguished Broadway, nightclub, TV, film, and recording career. Juilliard-trained, Reed honed her chops on international stages, and now shares her wealth of experience and expertise with students at Berklee College of Music and Marymount Manhattan College. We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Reed to MAC To School to present a master class in which she'll critique, challenge, and inspire eight singers to take their work to the next level. Whether you're recovering from a physical or vocal injury, or are simply looking for short-cuts to a more efficient vocal practice, you'll experience the power of these simple drills to short-circuit stage fright, get you out of your head and into your body, and set your instrument free. In this showcase, a phalanx of talented songwriters will parade their original holiday songs for YOUR consideration, interspersed with songwriter interviews by host/emcee Hannah Jane. Sheet music will be available for interested singers after the show. Straddling the worlds of cabaret, folk, musical theatre, and children's music, they'll share stories from the trenches, drop names, reminisce, and maybe even sing a song or two. "Christine Lavin is an iconic singer/songwriter who has earned her legendary status through years of tireless performing, doing shows at once quirky, hilarious and touching. Her songs have a wordsmith's eye for detail, with a comic's vision for the absurd, and a huge and fearless heart that will go anywhere." Gary Gould, The Davison Index 2:30-3:45 p.m. Self-Portrait with Jennie Litt Cabaret is an intimate art form with no fourth wall, rendering the performer completely exposed. Wow, this can be unnerving! Participants in this workshop will have a choice of two songs about that very feeling of exposure: "Self-Portrait" by Ed Kleban, and "You There In The Back Row," by Cy Coleman and Barbara Fried. This is an opportunity to get up in a safe space and experience the discomfort of letting oneself be truly seen—and the exhilaration of radical self-acceptance that can result. (6 participation slots available) 4-6 p.m. Refresh That Old Standard On A Dime!, with Steven Ray Watkins and Yaz Your musical reflexes will get a workout in our final session of the weekend! Eight singers will perform an American standard of their choosing, and then recast it on the fly in a whole new style—and then in another whole new style! Musical Directors Watkins and Yaz will mine their knowledge of musical genres—country, disco, bossa nova, rock, jazz, mariachi, klezmer, etc.—to challenge singers to move outside their comfort zones and explore how imagination, spontaneity, listening skills, and sheer guts can transform a familiar song into something entirely new and unexpected. She brings to the table over 30 years of creative and technical experience in the entertainment industry, the bulk of which was spent at Long View Farm Studios, the world-class residential recording facility in central Massachusetts. As a staff audio engineer and producer, Kelly worked on recording projects ranging from major-label artists to regional bands to session work for Bose Corporation, and an eclectic array of genres from heavy metal and classic rock to jazz, folk, and more. She is currently the Creative Producer for CGMM, Inc. a non-profit entertainment company whose mission is to utilize music to empower young people to create a more sustainable existence on this planet. Carolyn Montgomery is a multi MAC, Bistro and Nightlife award winning singer/songwriter, who has performed in major venues across 36 states, Montreal, and London. She is the Executive Director of American Songbook Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization that promotes and preserves classic American musical legacies through education programs, senior enrichment, live events, and Cabaret Scenes magazine. Montgomery's latest show, girlSINGER, a Celebration of Rosemary Clooney, opened in January, 2024, and sold out Birdland, 54 Below and London's Crazy Coqs. She will return to 54 Below in November by popular demand, after touring the show on the East Coast during the summer. Forbes recently featured Montgomery in an in-depth article about her work with the ASA and her performance career. She lives on the west side of Manhattan with a tall son and a small dog. Cheo Bourne is an actor, singer, and cabaret artist who toured for 3 years with the famed singing group The Platters, as well as performing his own cabaret works and theater in and around New York City, where he lives with his husband and daughter. Cheo's cabaret works include the twice MAC Award—nominated Moy-Borgen and Bourne's Office Party, The Bucket List, Touché, HELLO, Never Far From Home, You and I, Journey Home and Get Ready. He was first runner-up in 2016's Mama's Next Big Act competition at Don't Tell Mama. Cheo's regional theater credits include Shine! and The Water Dream (NYMF); The Battles (The Gym at Judson); Xanadu, Jerry Springer - The Opera (SpeakEasy Stage Company); Passing Strange, Hot Mikado, Cabaret (New Repertory Theater); Of Mice and Men, Animal Farm (New Rep On Tour); Harriet Jacobs (Underground Railway Theater); HONK! Sidney Myer is the booking manager at Don't Tell Mama. Richard Skipper is an entertainer, singer, story teller and host. He has appeared in legendary venues from The Taj Mahal in Atlantic City to Carnegie Hall and has shared stages with some of the biggest names in show business from Carol Channing to Lesley Ann Warren to Jo Anne Worley. New York theatre credits include Richard Skipper Celebrates, featuring the biggest names in cabaret and theater. He can be seen in the film Carol Channing: Larger Than Life. He also composed the score for Houdini Among The Spirits in collaboration with librettist/lyricist Chris Ceraso; it will receive its debut at The York Theatre in the Fall of 2025. Jennie Litt is a cabaret performer, director, performance coach, lyricist, playwright, fiction writer, and audiobook narrator based in NYC. She performs and writes with her husband, pianist-composer David Alpher. Together they have recorded two CDs of original cabaret songs, Two Apples (2014) and Songs For Sapiosexuals (2019) (available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music), and are developing a musical, The Mitfords At War, based on the lives of the notorious Mitford sisters, British aristocrats who used their beauty, wit, intelligence, and connections to become intimate with the men who power-brokered World War II. With David Alpher, she created the Cabaret Performance Workshop at SummerKeys in Lubec, Maine, now in its ninth year; they also co-direct an annual student cabaret at Vassar College, in addition to working with private clients in NYC and beyond. Jennie is a longtime member of MAC's Board of Directors. Steven Ray Watkins has been playing the piano for 47 years, and has been a working musician for 43 years. He attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music with a focus on Musical Theater and Piano. In the ‘80s, Watkins was the lead singer of the techno-pop band Ampersand, who had a top 20 Billboard single with the song "Traction." After their disbandment, Watkins returned to musical theater performance, performing in the national tours of big, Singin' In the Rain, and Showboat. Regionally he performed in Falsettos, Jesus Christ Superstar, 42nd Street, Evita, They're Playing Our Song, The Last Session, and Witness For the Prosecution, among others. In 2000, Watkins turned his attention back to music, and quickly became one of the most sought-after musical directors and pianists in NYC. As a theater MD, he has worked on A Chorus Line, Funny Girl, The Last Five Years, Once On This Island, etc. As a musical consultant and vocal coach he has worked with a myriad of different performers, including Patti LuPone, Hugh Jackman, Beyoncé, Anne Hathaway, Cynthia Nixon, Bonnie Franklin, Amanda McBroom, Louise Pitre, and Karen Mason. He consulted on the 2009 Oscars, has musical directed the MAC Awards 3 times, and has been involved in many benefits and concerts in NYC and around the country, including performances at Town Hall and Carnegie Hall.
