I don't think the South is romanticized at all (I'm happy to say) - it's mocked and defeated, more than once. Mame beats the South at its own game - winning the fox hunt and bringing the fox back alive. Then Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside can't even remember his own name (okay, *maybe* he's head over heels in love). And the title song - as Jerry Herman always said - is a spoof. "This time the South will rise again" - because of Mame Dennis of Beekman Place! And snotty Sally Cato gets sent packing in favor of Colleen.
