The esteemed Katharine Cornell created the role of Leslie Crosbie in the 1927 original production of The Letter by Somerset Maugham. The first film version in 1929 starred the legendary Jeanne Eagels and the remake in 1940 starred the equally illustrious Bette Davis. Both Eagels and Davis received Oscar nominations for Best Actress. Lee Remick played the same role in the 1982 TV version.

The role of Leslie Crosbie is undoubtedly a great one in that it has attracted such a group of female actors as Cornell, Eagels, Davis, and Remick.
