And let's not forget the films of William Haines, whose films often feature a flagrantly gay sensibility. Check out 1930's Way Out West, when he announces, "I'm the wildest pansy you ever picked!" He lived with his life partner for decades, supporting them both with his career as a highly sought-after interior decorator. The business still exists.
