I take your point, yet, arguably "I Don't Care Much" and especially this "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" do platform a stirring vocalist if he or she or they choose to make the numbers vocal showcases. Certainly Redmayne's "Tomorrow" on the recording is eerily gorgeous.

Though making a case for his casting based on score demands is not a hill I'll die on.

I'm one of those people who couldn't tolerate his self-indulgent excesses until his cover of Cher's "Believe" at the Kennedy Center Honors: he proved he can excavate unexpected nuance. He turned a techno pop diva signature into a soulful, introspective meditation on resilience. Shouldn't have worked; it worked brilliantly. His sensibilities do line up with this staging's dependence on performance brio.
