Last night, I had the unexpected fun of seeing J. Harrison Ghee perform in an intimate bar setting. It was at the very popular Musical Mondays at Sidetrack. The bar had teased that a Tony Award winner would be performing. Of course, I could have figured out who that was in advance if I gave it some thought, but I didn't and let myself be surprised.

I was sitting just a few feet from the performer. They were absolutely fantastic. As far as I could tell, the framework of the number was from Midnight in the Garden of Good a Evil , but the number felt improvisational (in the best way) and had lyrics about Chicago gay bars among other things that I don't think have anything to do with Midnight.

Ghee knows how to work a room in a way that brought back memories of some of the legendary cabaret performers of days gone by.

Prior to the live performance they showed a clip of an entire number from Midnight. It was a production number with Ghee and dancers, very nightclub, rather disco sounding. I enjoyed it. I'm seeing the show at the Goodman on Thursday.
